Happy Father’s Day With The Guncles: Exclusive Interview

It’s Father’s Day and the Guncles are in town! In honor of their September interview with Luxury Report Magazine, here’s some Father’s Day questions as a sneak preview. So, Happy Father’s Day to you and The Guncles!

Me: Happy Father’s Day! How will you be spending the day?

Guncles: This year for Father’s Day we’re planning on doing something fun with Simone… like mini golfing. Our perfect Father’s day is Simone having a fun day with her dads.

Me: What are some great Father’s Day gifts?
Guncles: We think the perfect Father’s Day gift is a grilling or wood-fire pizza making class at somewhere like Sur la Table or Williams-Sonoma. Then dad can take those skills home and treat the family with delicious meals.

Another great, inexpensive gift is a foot massage. In Los Angeles, we have a ton of foot massage spas and they cost around $25-$40 for an hour massage. What dad wouldn’t like his feet rubbed for an hour? (We certainly would!!)

Me: What could be the best gift in the world that Simone could possibly give you?

Guncles: The best gift Simone gives us is when she says “Dads – Your the best!”. At age 3, we know she means it. To her, we’re pretty cool dads! Hopefully we’ll earn that saying for the rest of our lives.

Stay Tuned for more from the Guncles!!!!!!!!!!

Recently, I had the privelege of eating at Cut, on the second floor of NJ hot spot 4Sixty6. The setting is very intimate, small yet charming, with red and roomy chairs. Dim-lit dining for all and delicious food… what more could you ask for?

The Menu

The thick Cut Bacon was amazing with a slight smokiness and a touch of black honey. The filet mignon cut like silk around my knife and Sammy’s Smack and Cheese was God’s work… What can I say? I’m a sucker for truffle. As for some of the other dishes, the calamari was insane. Each piece was so big we thought they were onion rings at first. Delicious. Now let’s talk potatoes… The vanilla-scented sweet potato, and the creme fraiche garlic mashed potatoes were outstanding. The salmon was also incredible, but I’d love to try the Chilean Sean Bass next time.

My only grievance was that I deperately wanted to try the Fricassee of Fresh Fruit with homemade red wine vinegar in brown sugar, but they had run out that evening. I was beside myself.

Bravo’s OC Housewives Premiere Re-Cap & First-hand Interviews

Housewives Highlights: What Happened Last Night?

-Heather makes a big opening statement by having a clam-bake at her house and not inviting Alexis. No olive branch this season, folks. Heather makes lobster a big star on the show, bringing them home for lunch and later having them as the main course at her clam-bake party. Now I’m hungry. Heather, can I come over for a lobster lunch?

-Vicki… Other than getting a nose job, fat injections into her face, and a chin implant, she finally got rid of Brooks. Thank the lord! The wannabe Brooks is gone… or is he?! Back to all the plastic surgery though, I’m really not into Vicki’s chin implant. Briana is about to pop up her baby and has moved back in with Mom, along with her new husband Ryan, so that when he gets deployed, Grandma Vicky is there to help. Briana goes into labor and is shown in the hospital several times via Vicki’s “home video” cam. 18 hours into labor, the doctor makes the decision for Briana to have an emergency c-section. It’s a boy! A boy named Troy.

-Tamra finally moved in with Eddie… into his house with her kids. In living together, Eddie’s had some micro-managing tendencies come to light, but remains soft-spoken and loving. Ya have to love Eddie. Tamara’s still moving forward with her gym venture “Cut Fitness”, holding 51% while Eddie owns 49%. Off topic, but is it just me or does Tamara looks even younger this season? I want to know what they’re putting in that OC water… other than fillers and botox. Love her. Tamara and Vicki are still broken up, so it’s Heather who calls Tamara to tell her that Briana is in labor, rather than Vicki.

-Slade gets his own bullet-point because he’s basically a housewife. He finally has a steady job, which makes Gretchen a very happy lady and I know he has to be happy now as well. He’s a radio host, which seems right up his alley…though Gretchen does miss having “her b*tch” around to make her bacon and her perfect cup of coffee. On one hand, when he didn’t have a job, he was broke. Now, on the other hand, since he has a job, it doesn’t seem he’s around as often as Gretchen would like… What’s a guy to do?

-Gretchen and Alexis are another broken friendship that hasn’t healed. They don’t talk at all since Alexis titled Gretchen as a bully. Though, both ex-besties did cut their hair much shorter this season. Maybe that’s a lame observation, but hey… anything to chew on, right? On the other hand, both Tamra and Gretchen walk into Heather’s party wearing pretty much the exact same outfit, so they’re obviously more on the same wave length. With Slade at work, Gretchen has taken over the marketing side of her company Gretchen Christine, hired a woman to help her, and has boxes of handbags and other products piled to the ceiling at her home. This bombshell’s on her way up.

-Alexis and Jim bought a 6,000 square foot home. No more renting. I feel like her hair ages her, but to each her own. One thing that hasn’t changed is her over-use of the term bullying. She even provides us with its definition. I’d love for her to be a little more positive… Love and let go, Miss Alexis. Not being invited to Heather’s clam-bake definitely amplifies Alexis’ feelings of dislike towards Heather. On the other hand, though she no longer talks to Gretchen, she does confess that she really misses their friendship… Jim still has his little ‘tude, but I don’t think that’s ever going to change.

We haven’t met the new housewife yet, but the trailer for the new season at the end of this episode definitely clues you in. Not sure how I feel about the newbie quite yet. Plus, she confesses to Heather in this season’s highlights that she’s a friend of Alexis, which makes Heather weary. The end of the first episode leaves off right before Tamra and Gretchen talk to Vicki for the first time at Heather’s clam-bake dinner. Dun Dun DUN!!!!!!!

So, what else can we expect to see this season (based on the highlights shown):
-Eddie starts to feel pressured about getting married
-Vicki makes Gretchen cry
-We see Heather come un-glued for the first time in a fight with her husband, showing they’re human
-Gretchen’s starting to get baby fever
-Brooks and Vicki are shown on a date arguing about possibly getting back together
-Beloved former housewife Lauri, along with fairytal hubby George come back and Lori’s got some juicy gossip to bring to the table
-Newbie Lydia tells Alexis she doesn’t think the women were bullying her and Alexis blames them for her being on Xanax
-Heather yells at Slade demanding an apology for something. Get it, Girl!
-Vicki tells Briana she misses Brooks and wants to start dating him again, but Briana says that if she does this, she’s moving out of Vicki’s house. Briana’s husband then crosses the line in a fight with Vicki.

Below find interviews with housewife Gretchen Rossi and former housewife Lynne Curtin from Runway Magazine.

Lynne Curtin – OC Housewives
Bonding over our New Jersey native pasts, Lynne and I got a chance to talk about our fun times on the Jersey circuit. This Boho chick is more than just a “housewife”. Though she’s left the Bravo series, she continues to grace the show with her laid-back, but spirited presence with little guest appearances. In the meantime, she is all about her design company. That’s right. Her cuffs, her purses, and the rest of her accessories have all taken over. Mixing edgy styles with fringe and glam is her general aesthetic and she is loving every second of it. With a new business partner in tow, Lynne Curtin Designs is off-and-running.

So, I know you’ve been designing jewelry and selling it, but have recently launched the new Lynne Curtin Designs. Can you tell me a little about it?Well, the new company is actually a collaboration with Gina Watson. She’s with South Bay jewelry and she has two stores, one of which has its own manufacturing there. It’s just taken my product to a whole new level.

Tell me about the launch event you had.
Well, I have a lot of new cuffs that are coming out along with the new website. There were other “housewives”, very fun. I know you’re on the East Coast, but if you ever come out to Orange county, it’d be fun.

Definitely. So what are some of the other products in addition to the cuffs that are new?
Well, I have a 2 inch leather cuff that you can interchange emblems on, which is just great. You can go from casual to dressy look. I also have a new necklace that can also be worn as a belt. I also have my handbags that are all lined with lamb leather. They are beautiful. Everything is finished with 24 karat gold and other pleading also. I think everyone will enjoy it. I love it. I’m kind of that Bohemian Hippie sort of glam.

I know so many of your handbags have that fringe look that I love, so is that how you got inspired, with the Boho chic look?
Yes, absolutely. I’m a child of the 70s, so I always maintain that sort of style, but add a little glitz and glam to it. I also have some classic items though. I know there’s this clutch on my website that’s more classic looking. I also have some gold metallic leathers that are fun for the holidays.

Well, I know you started out with cuffs and then expanded to other accessories, so what are some of the other products you have now? I know you mentioned belts, handbags…
Yes! I have a little doggie collar line with collars and little vests. They are great for my dog. I have a dachshund.

I used to have a dachshund. I love them.
Oh, me too! My little Lucy. I’ve had several. I love my dog. She actually just had a $7000 surgery on her neck, so she’s not going to get to wear anymore of my collars. But, anyway, I do a lot with different charities like breast cancer. I actually have a cuff on my website that’s called the Charity because I actually donate from the profits on the cuff to breast cancer. I also do a lot of events at my gym for charity. I’m doing a fashion show for the homeless. It’s been a long haul, but I feel like people are starting to notice my line more.

Have you ever thought of expanding to shoes or clothing?
Absolutely. I’m sure, so when I wear jeans I need to wear higher heels depending on the brand of jeans. I love the platform sandals. They’re like stripper girl sandals. I made a pair myself with leather and showed Tamra and she was dying over them. So, that’s another thing down the line maybe. Anyway, I wanted to tell you about my new logo. It’s sort of like the fleur-de-lis. I would love to do sandals and attach that logo to the flip-flop.

So, with the new logo and the new products, how’s the website going?
Well, you can go look at http://www.LynneCurtindesigns.com. We pride ourselves on getting things out as soon as we get the order in.

Great. What direction are you looking to take the company in this year?
We are definitely looking to getting into different stores, anywhere from Target to Neiman Marcus. Henry Bendel has approached me. I want more of a budget line all the way up to the high-end lines, so on some of my cuffs I tried to make the prices more affordable. In doing that, I try to incorporate pieces that are easier to make like this one cuff I have, I try to incorporate more metal instead of leather. My goal is to sell to the masses…one cuff at a time. (She laughs.) So, what’s your favorite piece?

Well, I loved the fleur-de-lis, so I love anything that has that. You have this one necklace that kind of has a crystal ball-like piece on it.
Yeah, like a disco ball. That peace can also be worn as a belly chain almost. You can wear it at any length and you can wrap around like three times.

I also really love the fringe clutches. Love them.
Yeah, that’s really my look, my era. I love rock, like I love Aerosmith. I got to meet Motley Crue the other night, which was awesome. I’m just a hippie girl with a taste of glam on the side.

Well, that’s good because that’s what is really in right now. Keep it chic, but add some edge and you’re good to go.
Yep. Exactly. You can take the simplest outfits to wear during the day and then glam them up for night. Put that necklace on that you were talking about and if fringe clutch or even a pewter cuff with big earrings and your set. That’s one thing. I have to get more earrings on my website! I’ve got some coming up, so they’ll be up there.

Okay, so what’s a good rule of thumb when you go through the learning process of putting a company like this together?
Oh, I’ve made so many mistakes, you wouldn’t believe, but it’s all part of the process. I’ve bought so much leather and gone to so many leather houses only to realize later that the weight of the leather was wrong. But, I just always keep saying to myself that if I never quit I can never fail. Plus, my partner Gina really keeps me in check.

Dancing With The Stars: An Inside Look With Karina Smirnoff

karina MF-magazine-5-2010

I have to say I love Karina Smirnoff. Her personality and spirit are as amazing as her dance floor moves. I’ve had the pleasure to interview her twice already and thought I’d post each interview here in honor of tonight’s Dancing With The Stars episode. In Runway Magazine and MF Magazine, she dished about so many things, both on and off the show… from Ralph Macchio to the Soviet Union, she tells all.

Runway Magazine Interview
9/6/11

Well, all her hard work has finally paid off! The infamous Mirrorball Trophy is hers. With celebrity partner JR Martinez, Dancing With The Stars has succumbed to the ballroom domination of Karina Smirnoff. I was fortunate enough to have a little “gab session” with her at the beginning of all the chaos from this past season and talk about what she had in store for viewers. We chatted about her makeup line, her collaboration with Bear Paw, a little gossip, but, most importantly, her dancing. So, were her predictions for the season correct? I caught up with Karina on her way to one of her hectic rehearsals, just a week or two before the DWTS premiere this Fall. Let’s see the road it took to get to that DWTS victory.

You’re working non-stop right now with rehearsals, right?
Well, we are on track. We did, for the first time, have our first somewhat difficult rehearsal yesterday. I guess JR thought that he was better than what he thought it looked like in the video because I always tape on the phone or on the iPad in order to learn better. So, he got a little discouraged. The guy is so hard on himself because he’s a military person and he tries to get it done right away. We both want everything yesterday, but it’s going to take time.

Right. So, it’s two perfectionists, huh?
Yes! When I do something, I don’t want the satisfaction and the gratification in a year. Heck now! I want it now! (She kids.) When we rehearsed for five hours today we want to see the results. And, they are there, but I guess he can only see me, so he automatically starts comparing himself to me. He is doing really, really well though. JR is an incredible person, absolutely incredible. The charisma, the charm, the personality of his, is so contagious. He’s also a great actor so we try to work on the story of each dance. I think people will be very pleasantly surprised.

Any predictions for the season ahead?
You know, I don’t. The show is about as unpredictable as it can get, as it’s proven over the course of twelve seasons. We actually haven’t seen anyone practice yet, so we think we are just doing really good. (She laughs.) We don’t practice at the studio warehouse where everyone else does. We actually practice at a studio that’s closer to both of our homes, so we don’t get to spy on the competition unfortunately. But, he being from the military forces and my being from the former Soviet Union, I’m sure we can find a way to spy on them.

Sneaky. I like it. Are you still designing all your costumes for each week? I know you love to do that as we’ve talked about in the past.
Oh, yeah! I know exactly what I want are costumes to look like. I always come up with an idea. I can’t tell you right now because it has to be a surprise.

Well, what can you tell me?! (I joke.)
Well, we are starting off with the Viennese waltz. This season they are starting off with the Cha-cha too. We are doing the ballroom dance, so the costumes will reflect the energy and the romance of the music… I’m talking into my butt right now. (She burst out in laughter.)

That’s okay! It works. Okay, I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. Let’s talk about Bear Paw. I know that last time I talked to you, you were working with them in creating new boots with thicker tread on the bottom.
It’s going great. We got the Alexa boots out and they were a great success. Half of the Dancing With The Stars cast wears the boots. It was so cool. They are so comfortable and I’m not even exaggerating when I say that. Especially during this season, when we are on our feet all day long, I only wear Bear Paw because they are so great. My second pair, called the Capulet, will be out soon and it has even more colors than the Alexa boots.

So, where are they being sold? I know they’re sold online. Where can you find them?
They are sold online at bearpawshoes.com, on my website, and on other sites. In the winter were going to have a big announcement, but right now that’s under wraps. Yay! But, with the Capulet, it’s actually taken from Romeo and Juliet. The name actually came from when Ralph Macchio was my partner a couple seasons ago on the show. We actually did a waltz and it was one of the most popular dances on the show, which was to Romeo and Juliet.

So, the Karate Kid inspired the Capulet.
Well, he inspired the name of the shoes. Ralph did a kick-ass job on the show. I mean he was such a great character, a great dancer, a great person, which is probably why the dance was so popular. Yeah, so he was the inspiration behind the Capulet.

Okay let’s move on to another brand. Tell me about your relationship with Girlactik Beauty.
It’s one of the best makeup lines there is on the market right now. The owner and I kind of came together and decided to create a line that would be easy-to-use and easy to apply, healthy, and something that would actually benefit your skin. I dance all day long and on-screen you wear a significant amount of makeup and you don’t want to clog your pores. I don’t want anything that’s going to dry out my skin either. And, I love what we came up with. It’s sexy, fashionable, beautiful, and I love that I can mix and match colors. I wear it on the show. I wear it off the show.

Well, let’s take a break from beauty and get back to dance. Let’s talk about your studio, Karina Smirnoff Dance. I know the grand opening wasn’t too long ago.
It is awesome! I am absolutely ecstatic about the studio. I was clueless at how much work it required, so I give a shout out to anyone who owns a studio out there. Now, with the school year going on we’ve included kids’ classes. I already have children as young as five and six in classes. Even though it is a lot of work, it is such a great feeling when you see the progress of the answers to come in. You see the results. Plus, I have a whole new support system during the show, so that’s great.

What kind of teachers do have there? Do you teach any of the classes yourself?
I teach a lot of classes myself. I have a number of students that I teach and then I have professional dancers as well.

Is it hard to juggle with DWTS?
Yes, we decided that sleep is overrated and I don’t need it. (She jokes.) . I don’t have time for a lot of things like going to the gym, but I don’t need to. My work makes me dance, you know? Dance makes you work out automatically. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and I think that I can get up, that I’m exhausted, but then I remember that there is a reason that I’m doing this. I’m doing something I love and I get paid for it. You can’t get better than that.
